Cavs v. Pacers • Milwaukee Bucks forward Giannis Antetokounmpo got into a heated confrontation with the father of Indiana Pacers guard Tyrese Haliburton following Game 5 of their first-round playoff series, spurred by what Antetokounmpo called a "disrespectful" exchange on the floor. • The Pacers were celebrating Haliburton's go-ahead layup with 1.3 seconds left in overtime that gave them a series-clinching 119-118 victory Tuesday night. According to Antetokounmpo, Haliburton's father, John, walked toward the Bucks star waving a towel and swearing at him. Celtics v. Knicks What do you do? Throwdown Thursday | NCAA in Court | Episode 615
Thursday May 01, 2025
Thursday May 01, 2025
"We are playing chicken with a damn federal judge," said one high-ranking college leader. • U.S. District Court Judge Claudia Wilken has issued a response to the amended House settlement submitted after this month’s hearing, writing in part: “The Court finds a decision by Defendants and NCAA member schools to begin implementing the roster limits before the Court granted final approval of the settlement agreement is not a valid reason for approval of the agreement in its current form despite the harm discussed above. Any disruption that may occur is a problem of Defendants’ and NCAA member schools’ own making. The fact that the Court granted preliminary approval of the settlement agreement should not have been interpreted as an indication that it was certain that the Court would grant final approval. […] The court will delay denial of final approval to permit the parties to attempt to modify the settlement agreement so that members of the Injunctive Relief Settlement Class will not be harmed by the immediate implementation of the roster limits provisions. One way of achieving that could be to modify the settlement agreement to ensure that no members of the Injunctive Relief Settlement Class who have or had a roster spot will lose it as a result of the immediate implementation of the settlement agreement.” Wilken calls for the parties to meet with a mediator within 14 days about potential changes to the settlement What Happens Next?... • The NCAA and power conferences released the following statement: “We are closely reviewing Judge Wilken's order. Our focus continues to be on securing approval of this significant agreement, which aims to create more opportunities than ever before for student-athletes while fostering much-needed stability and fairness in college sports.” • Leaders of the College Football Playoff gathered in Las Colinas, Texas, last week for their annual spring meetings, where they continued to discuss the playoff's future format and how to best determine the national champion in 2026 and beyond. What can 40 mil get you? • The most expensive football rosters are now in the $40M ballpark, according to Indiana HC Curt Cignetti, who tells CBS’ John Talty: "This is an unprecedented couple days, weeks, where everybody's waiting on this rev-share, and the five or six out there that have unlimited NIL resources, it's kind of scary for everybody else. #collegesports #ncaa #sportspodcast #sportsnews

Throwdown Thursday | How to Fix NIL | Episode 612
Thursday Apr 24, 2025
Thursday Apr 24, 2025
Could HR help? • To address the current disorganization in the NIL and transfer portal era, a study released Friday said each university should create a "human resources department" to enhance retention and relationships. Breakdown • According to the study, AD Advisors broke down college basketball into four tiers. Tier I consisted of programs that spent at least $4.2 million on basketball and maintained a top-30 mark on average on KenPom over the past seven seasons -- a group that mostly features schools from the ACC, Big Ten, Big 12, SEC and the Big East. Tier II included mostly non-power conference programs, while Tier III includes the bulk of Division I programs outside those leagues. NIL is a game changer • Jacobs, who hired Bruce Pearl at Auburn, said the portal and NIL climate have created a demand for schools to enhance the cultures of their respective programs. It's not that, it's when • The Buffaloes ruffled some feathers of past players and graduates when they announced that Hunter's No. 12 and Sanders' No. 2 would be retired before the spring game. They're only the fifth and sixth players in Colorado's 135-year history to receive that honor. • The #denvernuggets are a tepid 12-13 since the All-Star break and have lost some of what made them so dynamic just two years ago, even though they remain in fourth place in the West following Wednesday's win against the #sacrementokings . • Redick told the team that after he was hired by L.A. in June, leaving behind a burgeoning career as an NBA broadcaster and podcaster, he set two goals for himself: to win 50 games and to secure the No. 3 seed (76 of the league's 78 all-time champions were the No. 3 seed or better). • Memphis Grizzlies star Ja Morant debuted a new celebration earlier this week after he was fined $75,000 for making finger-gun gestures twice during Memphis' 110-108 win against the Miami Heat last week. The celebration has Morant mimicking the motion of throwing a grenade after making a 3-pointer and covering his ears. #paigebuckers is the #1 pick in #wnbadraft Will the draft rules change with the new CBA? • Last October, the WNBPA announced its intention to opt out of the current CBA at the end of the 2025 season.
